Famous Sweet Onion Pairs with Universal Music Group to offer Coupons, Song Downloads and Prizes

America’s No. 1 sweet onion, the Vidalia® onion, and Universal Music Group Nashville (UMG) are collaborating this summer on a social media promotion featuring coupons, free music downloads, and prizes ranging from autographed country music CDs to a trip to the set of a country music video. The famous Georgia sweetie and country music share a deep Southern heritage and broad based national appeal, which is why Vidalias and UMG chose to partner a second year.

Starting late April 2012, coinciding with the start of the Vidalia onion harvest, consumers can access multiple music-themed offers on Vidalia onion social media. Among the unique incentives are coupons to purchase Vidalias by the pound or to buy bags of Vidalias featuring contemporary versions of favorite Southern recipes. Consumers who “like” the Vidalia Onions Facebook fan page can select one of the 400,000 songs in the Universal Music catalog to download free. And, fans will be encouraged to enter a consumer recipe photo contest to win country music CDs each week autographed by Universal artists. Each week's photo winner will also be entered to win a grand prize trip for two to set of a country music video, most likely to be filmed in Nashville, Tennessee.

“We are proud to offer a coupon promotion this season,” said Wendy Brannen, Vidalia® Onion Committee Executive Director. She explains, “In recent years we have had more people write requesting coupons, but it is hard for a small growers’ group to fund a full scale coupon program. Our partnership with Universal has allowed us to structure this year’s campaign where we can continue to do some fun things like song downloads for our fans but finally offer coupons.”

“Country Music and Vidalia Onions are both proud products of the South that are enjoyed by folks from all over the country, so our partnering is a natural fit,” said Tom Lord, Vice President of Marketing for Universal Music Group Nashville.

Some of country music’s biggest stars will be featured on the different Vidalia onion marketing materials, including:

Vince Gill is a Country Music Hall of Fame member with 18 Country Music Association (CMA) awards, including two Entertainer of the Year awards and 20 Grammy® Awards, the most of any male Country artist. He has sold more than 26 million albums.

Josh Turner is a South Carolina native who has sold more than 10 million units (albums, tracks, mobile). He has nine top 20 singles, including “Long Black Train,” “Your Man,” and “Why Don’t We Just Dance.” “Time is Love” is the smash first single from his 2012 album release.

Easton Corbin is being touted as one of country music’s hottest new male vocalists. His debut album certified GOLD for sales over 500k units and featured the #1 singles “A Little More Country Than That” and “Roll With It.” Easton is the first solo male artist in 17 years to have his first two singles reach #1. “Loving You Is Fun” is the first single from his 2012 album release.

Lee Ann Womack is a multi-Grammy®, Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music award winner. She has had multiple #1 singles including “The Fool,” “A Little Past Little Rock” and “I Hope You Dance.”

In April 2011, coinciding with the start of the Vidalia onion selling season, the Vidalia® Onion Committee held a national Vidalia Onion Jingle Contest. The contest was a huge success, with over 60 entries from all over the U.S. and more than 136,000 visitors to the Vidalia onion website casting votes. All the entries can still be heard and enjoyed today at vidaliaonion.org.
