McDonald's is introducing a new sandwich that says "fall" in each tasty bite: the Cheddar Bacon Onion.

The Cheddar Bacon Onion sandwich brings new premium toppings of white cheddar and grilled onions, combined with hickory smoked bacon and finished in a creamy mustard sauce to create a one-of-a-kind taste experience for a limited time only.

Made with premium white chicken breast or 100% Angus beef, McDonald's new Cheddar Bacon Onion is a versatile sandwich.

Dean and I both tried the new topping combo atop an Angus burger. Our verdict: Thumbs up. It's very tasty, offering a sophisticated grownup taste. There's lots of bacon--enough to get some bacon flavor in each bite. The caramelized onions lend the sandwich a bit of sweetness while the white cheddar adds some tang.

The Cheddar Bacon Onion will be available at participating McDonald's restaurants nationwide from October 23 through December 16, 2012.

Don't miss your chance to give this tasty topping combo a try.

Some salad dressings beat the competition, inside and out.

Braswell's most popular all-natural dressings are now packaged in distinctive, reusable glass serving carafes. Available flavors include Italian, Raspberry Vinaigrette and Vidalia Onion Peppercorn, a personal favorite.

To make re-using the carafes even easier, the company also sells salad dressing mixes--just add vinegar, oil, milk, mayo or water following the instructions on the back, shake & serve. Mix flavors include Ranch, Italian, BBQ Ranch and Basil Vinaigrette.

For more information visit Braswell's website.

This year we introduced our new Extra Virgin Italian Dressing & Marinade. Again, we looked at what was available and knew that we could offer something better. We start with smooth extra virgin olive oil and mix in a bold blend of Tuscan spices. It's completely sugar free and makes an amazing marinade for all meats, seafood and vegetables.

Much will be made of the drink menu built by beverage director Belinda Chang, a James Beard award-winning pro. Comprised of carefully selected draft beers, boutique wines, andseasonal, handcrafted cocktails, it’s a great list. But her "Build-Your-Own Cocktail Kit" will get the most press. Because it's unique, at least for the next 10 minutes.

The kit is a bin packed of syrups, sodas, herbs, bitters, fruit slices and tincturesplus all the tools you'll need to shake, swizzle and stir things up. It arrives with a 2-ounce pour of whatever base spirit you picked (such as gin, tequila, vodka, bourbon, whatever). And then you get to make your own cocktail, or perhaps impose your creation upon an obliged date who might say, "Yep, this is good," smiling through the knowledge that there will be no second date. Unless you happen to actually be a skilled cocktail creator and/or conversationalist.

So, my advice is to order what's actually the best drink on the menu, with the added bonus that you don't have to make it yourself.

Behold, the hibiscus flip:

It's "just right" in terms of sweetness, balance, complexity, individuality, fun, and just about every measure by which to judge a cocktail.

Drink one and it won't matter if you or your date are good conversationalists or not, it will be a good night.

Bottom Line: Order a hibiscus flip and sit back in a cozy leather chair to enjoy it.

Red Pepper Taqueria

Located in a strip mall across the street from Whole Foods, at first glance it may appear that Red Pepper Taqueria is a typical neighborhood dive not worth serious foodie consideration. But you'd be wrong. It's a chef-driven restaurant with a focus on local and organic ingredients.
Chef/Owner Mimmo Alboumeh brings over 20 years of experience and knowledge to the restaurant he and a business partner opened December 2011.

Alboumeh, who has lived in Italy and Spain and so has been immersed in some of the world's best food-centric cultures, offers a menu that blends tradition and creativity. Items are fresh, flavorful and reasonably priced. Servers are eager to please. This is the sort of place where you can dress casual, have a beer and chat with friends, without compromising on food quality.

Bottom Line: Great addition to the North Druid Hills/LaVista neighborhood--and worth driving to if you don't happen to live down the street.

West Egg Cafe

For my story on cakes and coffee (in the Feb. 2013 issue of Where Atlanta magazine, on stands now), it was suggested that I try the Coca-Cola cake at West Egg Cafe. I took the advice and am very glad I did--that cake made my list of four great sweets to share with your sweetie.

But I couldn't very well drive all the way to West Midtown just for one cupcake. So Dean and I had brunch, too.

We split two entrees.

The Georgia Benedict ($9) tops a biscuit with turkey sausage, pours white gravy over the top and includes a side of garlic roasted grits. All white on the white plate (aside from a few chives for some visual contrast), it's not much to look at. But it's delicious; you'll find yourself craving another helping of this breakfast all week long.

We also tried the Deviled Egg Salad sandwich ($7.50) with bacon, greens, tomato and toasted white bread. Tasty, but the menu promises a cayenne kick and to be honest it's quite mild and tame for a Devil. The bread flavor dominates.

Bottom Line:Get the Georgia Benedict for brunch and then buy a Coca-Cola cupcake to enjoy at home for an afternoon snack.

Cook Hall's Hibiscus Flip

Cook Hall is now open in the former Market space inside the W Hotel Buckhead.
