At a recent tasting of sparkling wines, two discoveries stood out as the best of the evening:

Segura Viudas Brut Reserva is a Spanish cava made of 50% Macabeo, 35% Parellada and 15% Xarel-Lo. It bursts with notes of apple and pear, lime, pineapple and light floral. The wine has good acidity and complex flavors. It is dry and long on the finish. Pairs well with cheese, pasta, grilled chicken or shrimp.

Banfi Rosa Regale from Acqui Terme, Piedmont, Italy is 100% Brachetto. It tastes of raspberries, strawberries and orange blossom with crisp acidity. Pairs well with seafood, cheese and chocolate.
